BCUC Special guest : Jowee Omicil
The South African band from Soweto were a revelation at the Transmusicales de Rennes in autumn and won people over with their trance and innovation. The percussion and vocal ensemble accompanied by an electric bass have called their music “Africangugu”. BCUC is an acronym for “Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness” which literally means “Human Battle Freedom Conscience”. Like in any musical revolution, they use tradition to make something new by blending Nguni and Tsonga rhythms (two South African tribes) and age-old war chants yet staying true to the political and spiritual goal of a unified people. Red-hot saxophonist, Jowee Omicil from Quebec, is the premium accompanist in the trance performance.
