Ahmad Jamal + special guests: Abd Al Malik & Mina Agossi
There was a time, shortly after 1952, when the legendary Ahmad Jamal (born in 1930 in Pittsburgh) would undoubtedly have been seen as a hybrid success story among jazz purists if Miles Davis hadn’t spotted his unique talent. The live recording of At The Pershing: But Not For Me went around the world in 1958. The album spent over a trimester in the top ten for its category. Poinciana spent over 2 years in the top 100: a record! The pianist’s career is now always described in glowing terms and his last trip to Vienne was in 2011: L’Architecte, Le Prophète… Ahmad Jamal is the magician behind the trio. The genius has spent over sixty years blending unrivalled classical technique, elegance and Art Tatum-style power with scores worthy of Erroll Garner. A new vocal style has now inspired the pianist in Vienne: the rapper Abd Al Malik’s almost literary scansion and the acid sound of French-Beninese Mina Agossi whose talent hasn’t been forgotten since Red Eyes (2012 album with her mentor Archie Shepp) and, more recently, Fresh (2014).
