Archie Shepp All Star feat. Jason Moran + special guests Shabaka Hutchings & Marion Rampal
Archie Shepp went to a John Coltrane concert at Five Spot, New York in 1960 where he had a lightbulb moment and decided to devote himself to the tenor saxophone. Five years on and Shepp was recording with his idol. Ascension was released in 1966 and is still the epitome of free improvisation. Aside from Coltrane, Cecil Taylor and Bill Dixon fuelled the Florida musician’s growth through their traditional roots, their quest for new improv techniques and a greater focus on politics. In 1963 he founded the New York Contemporary Five with Don Cherry and John Tchicai. John Coltrane acted as the middleman for Shepp to sign with Impulse for a series of albums that are now classics: the wild yet sophisticated, lyrical yet innovative Fire Music (1965). The 80 year old avant-garde New Yorker explores the heritage of the man behind A Love Supreme to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Coltrane’s death in 1967. He is joined by a fantastic line-up of French and American stars (the Texan pianist Jason Moran) and an up-and-coming English saxophonist: Shabaka Hutchings (Sons Of Kemet).
