McCaslin was born in Santa Cruz (USA) in 1966 and got his first taste of jazz from his father, a pianist and vibraphonist. He joined Gary Burton’s quintet after a course at Berklee College. He joined Steps Ahead in 1991 followed by Ken Schaphorst’s Big Band, the Maria Schneider Orchestra and Dave Douglas’ quintet in 2005.By then he had recorded five albums as the leader. Five more were released and the latest is Beyond Now in 2016.
His work with the pianist and conductor Maria Schneider on Sue (Or in a Season of Crime) three years ago brought David Bowie together with the saxophonist Donny McCaslin and his merry men: Jason Lindner (keyboard), Mark Guiliana (drums) and Tim Lefebvre (bass). The British star soon asked them to work on his album.
Tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin’s solos stood out in Steps Ahead, the Maria Schneider Orchestra and Dave Douglas quintet and he now heads up the quartet that recorded (with Ben Monder on guitar) David Bowie’s famous Blackstar that was released 2 days before his death. The Californian saxophonist was shaken by his friend’s death and recorded Beyond Now in tribute to him.
Jazz à Vienne is supporting the new RhinoJazz(s) festival and the tribute to David Bowie with an international creation based on David Bowie’s music and a unique concert by "The Band from David Bowie’s Blackstar” featuring Donny McCaslin, Jason Lindner, Tim Lefebvre & Mark Guiliana
