Once upon a time Herbie Hancock was young and groovy! Herbie Hancock is a magician trained in classical music then by Miles Davis in the 60s (at the tender age of 20). The cool pianist has always been able to spot and stay ahead of new trends to get the most out of them. When it comes to the festival, the “Chameleon” holds the record for appearances in Vienne with 16 performances! King Hancock has made his mark on Vienne’s audiences and put his stamp on pop music from the last 40 years. One of our favourite appearances here was in 2004 with Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland and Brian Blade then with Shorter and Marcus Miller. The 77 year old Chicago performer is back with the new guard in soul (singer Lala Hathaway) and groove: bassist James Genus who’s played with Hancock since 2008, hip hop producer and drummer Trevor Lawrence Jr (Alicia Keys, Dr Dre) and the Californian musician and producer Terrace Martin (Snoop Dogg, Stevie Wonder, Raphael Saadiq, Kendrick Lamar). We ought to mention the boxset with five of the pianist’s first albums on Blue Note in the 60s that came out just before Christmas (2016).
